Bogus workmen alert as North Ayrshire police bid to trace trio who left woman 'badly upset'

A North Ayrshire woman was left "badly upset" after bogus workmen claimed they were at her home to check the boiler.

The incident happened on Thursday in Dreghorn with the trio, described as Eastern European, saying they were from a gas company and needed access to the property.

Nothing was stolen and the householder was not injured, however, police say she has been left "badly upset" by the ordeal.

Descriptions of the men have been issued as part of the investigation with local CCTV footage also being reviewed.

Police have launched an appeal for information today and warned residents to stay vigilant.

The first man is described as Eastern European with dark hair. He was wearing a hi-vis jacket, a mask and was carrying a folder.

The other two men are both described as Eastern European, had scarves covering their faces and were wearing black or navy jackets.

One of the men was wearing a dark baseball cap and the other was wearing a burgundy woollen hat.

Detective Constable Robbie McIntosh, of Saltcoats CID, said: “I would ask members of the public to be on their guard, clearly these three men are trying to dupe householders into believing they are legitimate workmen.

“If anyone saw these three men or noticed them hanging around the area, I would urge them to contact us. Any small piece of information could be vital in helping us trace these men.”

People with information are asked to call Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 1114 of 13 January.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
