Bogus caller robs elderly woman after posing as utility worker

Police are hunting a bogus caller who stole money from an elderly woman after posing as a utility worker.

The conman struck at a house in Melbourne Road, Saltcoats, at around 2pm on Tuesday, June 9.

Officer say he was in his 50s with grey hair and wearing grey clothing.

He stole a sum of money after convincing the elderly householder to allow him access to check for an alleged fault.

PC Johnson, Preventions and Interventions Officer for North Ayrshire said: “This was a cowardly crime against an elderly lady, who thankfully was unhurt as a result of this upsetting ordeal.

We ask that if you have information which may assist with this enquiry to contact Saltcoats Police Office on 101 quoting incident number 1743 (09/06).

“We would also encourage everyone to be vigilant and not to deal with uninvited cold callers at your home. These criminals can be very convincing and often specifically target the elderly or vulnerable members of our communities.”

“Our advice is simple - just politely say no and close your door.”

“We are asking everyone to follow our doorstep safety advice, to please look out for neighbours, pass this information to family and friends, and to report anything that appears suspicious.”
