Bodyguard Workwear acquired by Bunzl

A Birmingham workwear firm has been bought out by a global brand.

Bodyguard Workwear, which is based in Nechells and specialises in the design and distribution of safety workwear, tools and other personal protection equipment, has been acquired by listed group Bunzl.

It was founded in 1975 and supplies customers in the rail, petrochemicals, utilities, construction and retail industries in the UK and Ireland.

It posted revenue of £8 million in 2019.

London-based Bunzl is a specialist in international distribution and services and has operations across the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Chief executive Frank van Zanten said: "This is an important development for our UK safety operations.

"Bodyguard Workwear is a well-known and respected brand and the business is focused on the rail industry which is expected to grow further over the coming years.

"The acquisition pipeline continues to be promising with a number of ongoing discussions taking place."

Law practice Browne Jacobson and corporate finance firm Clearwater International advised the owners Bodyguard Workwear on the buyout whose terms were not disclosed.

Michael Stace, corporate partner at Browne Jacobson, said: "The owners have worked hard to build one of the leading protective workwear businesses in the UK and we wish the new owner well in continuing the success of the business going forwards."
