Bodybuilder with history of steroid use died from heart failure, inquest hears

A 'keen bodybuilder' and father, with a history of steroid use, died from drug-induced heart failure.

John Baldwin had been drinking with his partner Stephanie Wareing at their home in Wigan on July 16, an inquest at Bolton Coroner's Court heard.

Ms Wareing told the court that they had drank around 70cl of vodka between them, when Mr Baldwin, 36, collapsed on the sofa at around 3.30am on the morning of July 17.

He was rushed to Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, where he was later pronounced dead.

Toxicological reports following his death revealed that he also had cocaine and sildenafil in his system. When asked about his drug use, Ms Wareing said: "he never did it in front of me."

Mr Baldwin's GP Dr Nadia Thornber told the court that he was being treated for a number of medical conditions, including atrial fibrillation - a heart condition that causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.

Dr Thornber said that his heart medication had been changed around a month before his death and he had complained about side effects such as diarrhoea, tiredness, and 'feeling rotten'.

As a result, Mr Baldwin was advised to stagger the taking of his medication, in order to help pinpoint which one was causing the problems.

His cardiologist, Dr Haythan Hamdan described the medication he had been prescribed as 'essential' and told the court that Mr Baldwin was known to use anabolic steroids, which he had taken for at least six months.

Dr Hamdan added that anabolic steroids can affect the heart muscle and weaken it.

Mr Baldwin's family, in attendance at court, asked whether it was possible that his heart condition was hereditary.

His sister disclosed that their father has just been diagnosed with a heart condition and also told the court that Mr Baldwin's son is terminally ill and has had three open-heart surgeries.

Dr Hamdan said that without knowing the specifics of the different diagnoses, it would be impossible to say but added: "I would advise any direct relatives to have an electrocardiogram (ECG)".

Pathologist Dr Stephen Wells carried out the post mortem on Mr Baldwin's body and found that his heart weighed almost double that of a regular person.

He said that this could have been due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HOCM) - a disease in which the heart muscle becomes abnormally thick.

Alternatively, he suggested that it was possibly as a result of Mr Baldwin's 'prolonged' steroid use - as it can increase the size of all muscles, including the heart.

Dr Wells said that on the balance of probabilities, the cause of Mr Baldwin's death was 'acute left ventricular failure', caused by 'marked left ventricular hypertrophy'.

The 'cardiotoxic effects of cocaine and sildenafil' were also recorded as a contributing factor.

Recording a narrative conclusion, Mr Teasdale said: "John Edward Baldwin died as a consequence of left ventricular failure, on a background of the use of cocaine and sildenafil".
