Judge Nirmal Shant QC said: “It was a sustained attack during which you proceeded to kick and stamp on him."
"You used violence when it is plain he was not in a fit state to fight back.
“You used your fists and your feet to attack him and in addition to that you humiliated him by urinating on him.
“I accept that he may have started it by banging on the door where you were staying but it was finished comprehensively by you.
“You pushed him with force and he fell on to his back. As a result, he suffered a liver laceration and two fractured vertebrae.”
Abigail Joyce, prosecuting at Derby Crown Court, said the incident took place in the early hours of October 11 last year.
She said Mason was staying at a friend’s flat in Portland Street, Normanton, and that the victim lived in the flat above.
She said: “The complainant started the incident when he was kicking and banging on the door for the flat where the defendant was staying.
“He came out and shoved him hard causing him to land on his back.
“He then walks over to him and urinates on him. It was gratuitous degradation of the complainant.”
Miss Joyce said over the next 10 to 15 minutes Mason punched, kicked and stamped on the victim, who he went to school with.
They had known one another for more than 20 years.
She said the following day the complainant woke up in severe pain but had no recollection what had happened to him as he was so drunk.
Miss Joyce said Mason paid for a taxi to take the injured man to hospital where a scan revealed that two vertebrae on his back had been fractured and his liver had suffered a laceration.

Steve Cobley, for Mason, said his client has shown genuine remorse for his actions, even breaking down in tears when he heard about the extent of the injuries he caused.
He said: “He has had issues with alcohol and anabolic steroids which contributed to what happened that evening.
“On his release he hopes for a better future and wants to leave the area and start afresh.”
