Bodybuilder dies after steambath post-workout, dehydration was the real cause?

The sudden death of renowned bodybuilder and nine-time event champion, Yogesh has left the fitness community grappling with grief and disbelief . The 41-year-old fitness icon died on Sunday, moments after a workout session at a gym in Korattur, Chennai, where he had achieved the Mr. Tamil Nadu title just last year.

After an intense hour-long workout, he exited the floor, informing his colleagues that he felt drained and intended to unwind with a steam bath. Concerned, his coworkers decided to check on him in the locked bathroom half an hour later. Upon receiving no reply, they decided to pry the door open, only to find Yogesh unconscious on the floor. He was rushed to the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital (KMCH), where medical professionals pronounced him dead.

What caused the death?Preliminary investigations point towards cardiac arrest as the suspected cause of death, but the exact circumstances surrounding Yogesh's tragic passing remains a mystery, pending a deeper examination of his medical history.

Senior cardiologist, Dr. G Sengottuvelu, and fellow bodybuilder A Purushothaman, the 2018 Mr. Tamil Nadu titleholder, told TOI about the potential factors that could have led to Yogesh's demise. One possibility is that he had a pre-existing heart condition that was worsened by the intense exercise. Another possibility is that he became dehydrated from the workout and the steam bath, which caused an imbalance in his electrolytes. This imbalance can lead to arrhythmia, or improper beating of the heart, which can be fatal.

The recent rise in deaths of bodybuildersThe death of Yogesh is a tragic reminder of the importance of listening to your body and not pushing yourself too hard. It is also important to be aware of the potential risks of bodybuilding, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.

In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile deaths of bodybuilders, both in India and abroad. This has raised concerns about the safety of bodybuilding, particularly in the wake of allegations that some bodybuilders are using dangerous steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

It is important to note that bodybuilding can be a safe and healthy activity, but it is important to do it the right way. This means consulting with a qualified trainer and doctor before starting any new program, and listening to your body and taking breaks when needed.

Here are some tips for safe bodybuilding

1. Undergo a thorough medical evaluation before starting on a new bodybuilding program.

2. Start with manageable workout intensity and duration, progressively increasing as your fitness level improves.

3. Pay attention to your body's signals, and take breaks as needed to prevent overexertion.

4. Maintain optimal hydration levels by drinking water before, during, and after workouts.

5. Steer clear of steroids or other potentially hazardous performance-enhancing substances.

6. Support your body with a nutritious diet and ample rest to aid in recovery and muscle growth.
