A man is under police guard in hospital after a body was found in a car at a beach car park on the NSW Central Coast.

Emergency services found the body of a man believed to be in his 40s, with stab wounds, in the car parked on Trafalgar Avenue at Umina Beach at around 3.15am on Monday.

Police say a 30-year-old man arrived at Gosford Police Station around 7.30am, suffering laceration wounds.

He was taken into custody and taken to hospital for treatment where he remains under police guard.

Police said the two men are locals and are believed to have known each other.

Charged are expected to be laid against the younger man when he is released from hospital, according to police.

Brisbane Water Police District Crime Manager, Detective Inspector Paul Laksa said details around how the men sustained the injuries remain unknown.

"A large area has been cordoned off...we believe that may be of interest to us," he said.

"I think the main thing is that we don't have someone out in the public at large."

A crime scene has been established and investigations are underway by detectives from Brisbane Water Police District assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Gosford Police.
