Body of woman found on Co Down beach

A body has been found on a Co Down beach.

Part of Tyrella beach outside Newcastle has been sealed off following the grim discovery on Tuesday afternoon.

The Down Recorder is reporting the partially-clothed body of a woman was found on the beach after 3pm on Tuesday by a dog walker. It is understood the body was found at the high water mark at the eastern end of the beach.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police are in attendance at the find of a body on a beach in Newcastle at approximately 3.10pm on Tuesday 2 February.

"There are no further details at this time."

Sinn Fein MLA Chris Hazzard said: "The discovery of the body of a woman on the east end of Tyrella strand is a tragedy.

"The local community has been shocked and saddened at this discovery.

"My thoughts are with the family and friends of this woman at this sad and difficult time."

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie added: "Today's news has brought immense shock and sadness to the local community.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with this woman’s family and friends to whom I wish to extend my deepest sympathies.

"I commend the great work of our emergency services including the Coastguard at this tragic time."
