Body of woman found in Florida hotel alongside two live monkeys

The body of a woman has been found in a Florida hotel alongside two live monkeys and an “incoherent” man, authorities have said.

The woman has been named by North Port Police as Lisa Marie Smith, a 59-year-old from Arcadia, Florida. Her body was found in the Budget Inn Naples, Florida on the 29 January.

The man in the room at the time was reported as “incoherent”. He received medical attention, and will be questioned about Smith’s death. His name has not been released.

Two live monkeys were also found at the scene, and were being kept in cages.

Both monkeys have been taken to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission in good health. They have been identified as Capuchin monkeys, which are often kept as exotic pets.

A note was also found in the room, though police have not revealed what this said.

The death is being treated as suspicious, though there are no obvious signs of trauma to the body. The cause of death is undetermined.
