The body of a teenage boy was recovered from a pond on a south London common on Wednesday evening.

Police said they were treating the death as “unexpected” after the teenager’s body was recovered from Bidder’s Pond on Mitcham Common around 6.35pm.

Officers said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Scotland Yard spokesperson said: “His family has been informed.

“The death is currently being treated as unexpected. His family are currently being supported by specialist officers.”

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service also confirmed they were called to the scene, saying they attended at 6.39pm.

“We sent resources to the scene, including members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and an incident response officer,” said a spokesperson.

“Sadly, a patient died at the scene and was taken to hospital by a third party.”
