Body of Nottingham hillwalker found in Scotland

A grieving daughter has told of her devastation after her dad's body was found on a mountain in Scotland while he was on one of his adventures.

It comes after a massive search started to find 84-year-old John Smith who went missing since last Thursday, August 5, reports Daily Record.

The man who is originally from Nottingham was last seen leaving the Crianlarich Hotel at 7.15am that day with the intent to walk in the area of Crianlarich and Oban.

His body was recovered yesterday afternoon near the summit of Ben Cruachan, Police Scotland have confirmed.

His daughter Helen Bang said that John, who is known as Frank, was a seasoned climber who regularly did 12-mile walks and desperately appealed for help in finding him.

But in a tragic social media post early this morning she announced that Mr Smith's body had been recovered on Ben Cruachan and that he had died 'walking somewhere he loved'.

The heartbreaking post included a picture of Mr Smith and his late wife Rosemary.

It read: "My Dad's body was recovered from Ben Cruachan yesterday afternoon.

"He died with his boots on, walking somewhere that he loved. People must do things that bring them joy.

"I will miss him forever, but feel very lucky that he was my Dad.

"We are very grateful for all the kind messages from friends and strangers. If any one wants to make a donation, however small, in memory of Frank Smith to Oban Mountain Rescue, who made Herculean efforts to find him, that would be much appreciated.

Prior to the formal announcement, Helen announced her 'great sorrow' that the body had been recovered although no formal identification had taken place at that stage.

Helen from Bonnybridge also urged donations to Oban Mountain Rescue team.

She wrote: "It is with great sorrow that I have to let you know that my Dad's body was recovered from the mountain yesterday afternoon. Although no formal identification has yet taken place, they are confident that it is him.

"We are really touched by the hundreds of messages of support we have received from both friends and strangers."

There has been an outpouring of grief online.

One person wrote: "Frank was a lovely man and I know he will be greatly missed by his neighbours in Nottingham. May he forever rest in peace."

Another added: "He did die doing what he loved which is a comfort to you, I'm sure. May he rest in peace with your dear mother."

A third wrote: "He did die doing what he loved which is a comfort to you, I'm sure. May he rest in peace with your dear mother."

The massive search effort included helicopters scanning the mountains.

However, the tragic find is understood to have been made yesterday (August 10).

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Around 2.50pm on Tuesday, 10 August, the body of missing man John Smith (known as Frank) was recovered near the summit of Ben Cruachan.

"His family are aware and there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

"We would like to thank the local community for their assistance during the investigation and to everyone who shared our post."
