A woman's body has been found in the Leeds and Liverpool canal.
Police confirmed they made the sad discovery following reports that a woman was missing from her home in Parbold.
The unnamed woman, in her 80s, was reported missing at around 7.45pm on Sunday, January 5.
Lancashire Police said a body, who they believe is that of the missing woman, had been recovered from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal close to Mill Lane yesterday (January 6).
A spokesperson said: "We were called at around 7.45pm on Sunday (January 5th) to reports a woman aged in her 80s had gone missing from home in Parbold.
"Sadly an underwater search team located a body at around 12.30pm yesterday (Monday) in the canal, close to Mill Lane.
"Formal identification has yet to take place, but we believe the body is that of the missing woman.
"At this time there are thought to be no suspicious circumstances. A file will be passed to the coroner in due course."
