Body of missing student Gurashman Singh Bhatia found in Canary Wharf by police divers

Police are appealing for information after the body of a 23-year-old student was found in Canary Wharf.

Gurashman Singh Bhatia was reported missing after a night out with friends on Thursday December 14.

His body was found by police divers in the water in South Quay six days later, on Wednesday afternoon.

Scotland Yard is now appealing for help piecing together his last known movements.

Gurashman, from India, was studying in London.

He was last seen on CCTV in the South Quay area at around 4.20am on Friday, 15 December, following a night out.

He was reported missing shortly before 5.50pm.

Police launched a major investigation, viewing CCTV, interviewing witnesses, and analysing phone and financial data.

Specialist officers carried out searches in the water around Canary Wharf and found a man's body on Wednesday.

"Although formal identification has not yet taken place, Gurashman's family has been informed," said a Met Police spokesperson.

"Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Police are treating his death as "unexpected". They say there is "nothing to suggest it was suspicious", but are keen to find out more so they can confirm this.

The Met on Wednesday issued a CCTV image showing Gurashman on the night he was last seen.

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, responsible for local policing in Tower Hamlets, said: "This is an extremely tragic outcome and is not the news we were hoping to give to Gurashman’s family and friends. I send them my deepest condolences.

"Gurashman’s death is being treated as unexpected, and while there is nothing to suggest it was suspicious, we will ensure our investigation is as thorough as possible to confirm this.

"Because of this, we are releasing a CCTV image of Gurashman that was taken before his disappearance and would like anyone who may have seen him in the Marsh Wall area on the evening of Thursday, 14 December and in the early hours of Friday, 15 December, to contact us."
