Body of missing Scots climber recovered from Himalayas

The body of an experienced Scottish climber has been recovered from the Himalays, it has been confirmed.

Martin Moran , who was based in Lochcarron, and seven other climbers disappeared on May 26 when an avalanche hit the Nanda Devi region of India.

Seven bodies were found earlier this week by Indian authorities and it has been confirmed by a mountain company that Martin's body was one of them.

The rescue team is still searching for the eighth climber.

Four Britons, two Americans, an Australian and an Indian made up the group, who had been attempting to climb India's second-highest peak.

Mountain Equipment paid tribute to Martin, who owned the trekking company Moran Mountain , by saying he was an "inspiration" to many.

A Twitter post by the firm read: "It is with a sense of profound shock and sadness that we have received confirmation that Martin Moran has died whilst climbing in the Indian Himalaya.

"As a guide, mountaineer and respected author, Martin was a long-standing friend and ambassador for Mountain Equipment.

"Martin, a British and IFMGA Mountain Guide, had been leading an expedition to climb Sunanda Devi (Nanda Devi East) along with seven other climbers when they were reported missing in early June.

"Martin was an inspiration to many and his talent as a climber was unquestionable, having pioneered numerous routes in the Himalaya and established more than a hundred new winter climbs in Scotland – many of a high standard which have gone on to become sought-after test-pieces.

"Our thoughts are with his wife Joy and two children Alex and Hazel along with those of the other climber’s friends and family.

"Martin, you will be sorely missed. Rest in peace."
