Body of missing British hiker found in New Zealand

Police have found the body of missing Stephanie Simpson in New Zealand.

Ms Simpson disappeared after going hiking during the weekend.

The 32-year-old was reported missing on Monday after she did not turn up for work.

On Friday officers said they found her body after search and rescue teams discovered what were thought to be her boots and backpack.

Sergeant Mark Kirkwood said: "Police extend their condolences to Stephanie's family at this tragic time.

"The family are understandably grieving and they have asked media to respect their request for privacy during this difficult time.

"Police would also like to thank everyone involved in the search since it began on Monday for their considerable efforts to locate Stephanie.

"The search was extremely challenging at times, especially in consideration of the terrain, and the work of all involved is to be commended."

Her body was found at around 1.40pm in the Pyke Creek area.

Ms Simpson reportedly told friends she had planned to go hiking in Mount Aspiring National Park at the weekend.

The park on New Zealand's South Island is described by the country's Department of Conservation as a "wonderful mixture of remote wilderness, high mountains and beautiful river valleys".

"It is a walker's paradise and a must for mountaineers," it added.

Police in New Zealand said Ms Simpson, from the Basildon area of Essex, was "reasonably experienced and very fit", the New Zealand Herald reported.
