Body of man pulled from lake as police surround park

The body of a man was pulled from a lake in a park this afternoon.

Merseyside Police confirmed the man was pronounced dead at Birkenhead Park in Wirral shortly after officers were contacted at 2.05pm.

An investigation is now underway as police check CCTV and make witness enquiries to establish what has happened and to find the man's next of kin.

A police presence remains at Birkenhead Park and part of the park is sealed off from members of the public while the investigation continues.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm officers are today, Thursday 30 December, at Birkenhead Park in Wirral.

"Emergency services were contacted at 2.05pm following reports that the body of a male had been discovered in the lake.

"The male was removed and he was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and notify his next of kin.

"An investigation is currently underway and CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out in the local area. The area around the lake is currently cordoned off."

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to DM @MerPolCC quoting log 465 of December 30.
