The body of a man was found washed ashore in Barna, Co Galway on Tuesday evening.
The tragic discovery was made at New Village in Furrymelia by a passer-by who alerted gardai.
Gardai are treating the man's death as a "personal tragedy".
A garda spokesperson said: "The remains have been taken to the mortuary at Galway University Hospital where a post mortem is expected to take place on Wednesday, December 18.
"Gardaí are treating the death as a personal tragedy and a file will be prepared for a coroner’s inquest which will be held at a later date."
