Body of man found in river identified as missing pensioner with Alzheimer's

The body of a missing elderly man with Alzheimer's has been found in a river on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Walter Anderson, 84, was last seen in the Scottish capital on Thursday at around 11pm, and was later reported missing.

Officers were then called to a river in Balerno, a village on the outskirts of the city, after the body of a man was found in the water at 9.50pm on Saturday.

Police Scotland today confirmed the man's identity and said they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Mr Anderson's family have been informed of his passing, police said.

A report has been lodged with the relevant authorities.

The police thanked members of the public for their help with the case.

A police statement reads: "The deceased has been formally identified as Walter Anderson ,84, who had been reported missing from the Edinburgh area. His relatives are aware.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

"The media and members of the public are thanked for their support during our investigation."
