The dismembered body of a 16-year-old student has been found in a plastic bag days after she was reportedly kidnapped as she left school.
Izamar Mendez Mendez is said to have been snatched on Friday after she left her high school in Cosoleacaque, in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz.
Her body was found on Sunday in a plastic bag on a road of the colony Costa de Marfil, in the municipality of Minatitlan, in the southern area of Veracruz.
Local media report the bag was found by drivers who noticed a bad smell and called the police.
The authorities picked up the body which was taken to forensic experts in order to undergo an autopsy where she was finally identified.
Her murder has caused outrage among students at her school, with pupils protesting outside the facility and complaining about a lack of security.
One unnamed student told reporters: “She was a very happy girl, she did not have any problems with anybody at school. Like all young people, she also had dreams, but sadly this happened.”
Another student said: “We want security, we want to be kept safe because we are in danger on our way to school.”
The state of Veracruz hit the headlines earlier this year when the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel group carried out massacres there.
The family of the victim have taken her body to Chiapas, where they are from.
The Governor of Cuitlahuac, Garcia JImenez, told local media that there are two lines of investigation open in the murder case but these were not revealed.
No arrests have been reported and no motive has been provided for the crime.
