The body of an Irishman who went missing in Tenerife two years ago has been flown home for burial.
Peter Wilson, from Rochfortbridge in Co Westmeath, vanished while holidaying on the Spanish island in March 2019.
In February his family confirmed his remains had been found – and his coffin was flown home at the weekend.
His mother Jackie said yesterday: “After two long, agonising, heartbreaking years, the last three months of them being the hardest waiting to get Peter home.
“Up until that we always held that little glimmer of hope he would one day walk in the door with his cheeky smile. But that hope was dashed on January 11 when we heard Peter’s remains were found. It was devastating news, but it’s closure now for all of us.”
Jackie thanked all those who supported the family and made it possible for them to travel to Tenerife in search of Peter.
The 33-year-old checked into the Malibu Park Hotel in Santa Cruz and went to Playa de las Americas on March 23 to watch the Ireland v Gibraltar match.
The dad of two returned to his hotel and took another taxi back to Playa de las Americaas and was last seen close to where the driver dropped him off.
Jackie said: “The help of the amazing Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and all of ye [sic] has made it possible for us to bring Peter home to us and give him the Christian burial we want for him.”
