Body of Irishman pulled from the water after tragedy at popular holiday spot in Spain

The body of an Irishman was pulled from the water after a drowning tragedy in Spain.

The incident happened on Friday morning in the Zurriola Beach area of San Sebastián.

The region in the Basque Country is popular with holidaymakers, Dublin Live reports.

The 31-year-old entered the sea with two of his friends, who it is understood are both Irish.

Emergency services raced to carry out a dramatic rescue effort after his friends raised the alarm at around 4am.

However they were unable to save the man and his body was recovered from the water, according to local newspaper El Diario Vasco.

Zurriola Beach is a popular surfing beach and is known for its strong waves which can reach the height of five to six feet.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that they are offering assistance to the family after the tragedy.

A spokeswoman said: "The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and providing consular assistance. The Department does not comment on the details of any specific case."
