Body of horse and newborn foal left for almost a week in field in Ballyfermot

The body of a tragic horse and her foal have lain in a field in west Dublin for almost a week to the disgust of locals.

Residents rushed to the mare's aid on Tuesday after she got into difficulty while delivering the foal.

A vet and three officials from the DSPCA raced to the scene but were unable to save either of the stricken animals.

The vet put the horses down but their bodies have yet to be removed from the site by Dublin City Council.

The owner of the horse has not been identified.

A spokeswoman for the DSPCA thanked locals for their assistance and urged anyone with information about the horse's owner to contact them.

She told Dublin Live: "As the horse was not microchipped and the locals did not know who owned her, the DSPCA are asking for any information to help with this case. Please send details to inspectors@dspca.ie or fill in our online form www.dspca.ie/what-we-do/rescue-cruelty/report-cruelty/

"The local authorities were contacted about the removal of the animals and the DSPCA have been assured that there is a plan to remove them ASAP.

"The DSPCA were also at a call for a horse yesterday, Thursday 16 May where another animal had to be put to sleep by a DSPCA Vet.  The body of this horse has already been removed.

"Removal of dead animals is the responsibility of the Local Authorities or the land owner and removal can take a number of days.

"In the case of live animals (horses/donkeys) that are reported being kept on land it is not registered as an Equine Premises then it is the local council or the private land owner who is responsible for their removal."

A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council told Dublin Live that "arrangements have been put in place to remove both animals."

Volunteers from My Lovely Horse Rescue visited the site on Thursday and put blankets over the tragic horses as a mark of respect.

The group named the animals May and Summer and called on Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed to take action on animal cruelty.

They said: "Two of the MLHR volunteers put blankets over their bodies and shed many tears.

"Somebody put her there, heavily pregnant with no one to look after her.

"Is this what Ireland has become? Cruel and uncaring?

"Minister Creed, how long are you going to turn a blind eye?"

A spokeswoman for Dublin City Council told Dublin Live arrangements have been put in place to remove both animals.
