Body of hillwalker found after falling from Scots mountain

A man has died after plunging from a mountain in the Highlands earlier this week.

The 54-year-old fell from the ridge of An Teallach near Dundonnell in Wester Ross on Tuesday, March 1.

Officers from Police Scotland, coastguard and mountain rescue teams were called to the area, often referred to as the 'great wilderness' at around 2.45pm.

Sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

No other injuries were reported.

A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Police Scotland confirmed the tragic incident to the Daily Record on Wednesday afternoon.

Sergeant Kay Macrae told the Record: "At around 2.45pm on Tuesday, March 1 officers received reports of an injured hillwalker on An Teallach near Dundonnell in Wester Ross.

"Emergency services attended and a 54-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a full report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal."

Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team confirmed that the man passed away after falling from the main ridge of the mountain.

A Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team chief told STV news : “Two of our team members assisted HM Coastguard helicopter in evacuating the deceased person from An Teallach.

“The gentleman concerned had died after a fall from the main ridge of the mountain.”

HM Coastguard stressed the incident was 'police-led' but confirmed they were called to assist and sent one helicopter from Inverness.

A spokeswoman told the Record: "HM Coastguard was asked to assist Police Scotland with an incident at Sgurr Fiona, An Teallach yesterday.

"The coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Inverness was sent."
