The body of an elderly man was discovered in a drain in Co Laois today after what is believed to have been a tragic accident.
A post-mortem is to be carried out on Friday to determine the cause of the man’s death.
The body of the man, aged in his 80s, was found on land beside the Manor Hotel which is also close to the popular Abbeyleix Bog wildlife haven.
It is believed that the man, who is from Portlaoise, had parked his van near the hotel ahead of going for a walk on the bog, the entrance to which, is located beside the hotel.

It is understood that he was located by worried relatives, who were looking for him since he failed to return home on Wednesday.
It appears at this stage that the elderly man may have tragically slipped and fallen into the drain during a walk on Wednesday evening.
