Body of a man recovered after car plunges into River Lee in Cork

The body of a man has been recovered from the River Lee in Cork city centre this afternoon.

Gardai, the fire brigade, ambulance crews and search and rescue divers all attended the scene at Kennedy Quay.

Crew members of a Dutch ship that is berthed nearby told CorkBeo that Gardai responded to a commotion in the same area last night all though it is not known if this is related to incident.

A statement from the Gardaí said: "Gardaí and emergency services are currently attending an incident at Kennedy Quay in Cork City, Co Cork. No further information is available at this time."

A further statement from the Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery said: "CCMPSAR were contacted by the family late yesterday evening of a missing person we liaised with Gardaí and we commenced a sonar search in the Kennedy Quay area.

"We identified 2 areas of interest and we stood down at 3.30am.

"We resumed our search this morning for the missing person and Mallow Sar also arrived we began another sweep of the city area of Kennedy Quay again located a target of interest.

"Mallow also used their sonar and narrowed the search area we put in our divers but could not locate the car but Mallow divers located the car and recovered the missing person rip."
