Body of 50-year-old man found with gun shot wound in farmhouse in Cork

The body of a 50-year-old man has been found in a farm building in Cork after gardai  responded to reports of a man with a gun.

Gardai were first called just after 11am yesterday morning by a concerned member of the public to a farm in Carrignavar, north of Cork city.

The gardai did not locate the man upon arrival but a cordon was set up around the area where he was last sighted and a search then commenced.

Local Gardai were assisted at the scene by trained negotiators and the Armed Support Unit, Cork Beo reports.

The body of the man was found in a farmhouse inside the search area and a firearm was also discovered at the scene.

The man sustained an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene with the local coroner also being informed of the death.

No shots were discharged by gardai and no one else was injured during the incident.

The man's body will now be removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The incident is being treated as a personal tragedy and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
