Body of 15-year-old girl pulled from Scots river after canoeist gets in trouble on water

The body of a teenage girl has been pulled from a Scots river after a tragic rescue operation.

We told how police had officers raced to the River Tweed, south of Rutherford, near Kelso on Monday after reports of a canoeist 'getting into difficulty'.

A rescue operation was launched on arrival and emergency crews found a body shortly after.

Now police have confirmed that it was the body of a 15-year-old girl.

Her family have been told of the tragedy.

Detective Inspector Alistair Sellar said a probe would be launched to find out the full circumstances of the incident.

He said: “We were called around 3.30pm on Monday, 22 March 2021 to a report of a canoeist getting into difficulty on the River Tweed, south of Rutherford, near Kelso, on Monday, 22 March.

“Emergency services attended and a rescue operation was launched.

"The body of a 15-year-old girl was recovered from the water a short time later. Her family are aware.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident .

"A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.”
