Body of 15-year-old girl found on railway line after report of casualty on tracks

The body of a 15-year-old girl was found on the railway line between Wigan and Southport, police have confirmed.

The line was closed on Sunday at around 1.40pm after emergency services were called to reports of a casualty on the tracks near New Lane station in Burscough.

Paramedics quickly arrived in the area and tragically pronounced a teenage girl dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police issued an update on the incident, confirming that the girl's family have been informed.

In a statement, the force said: "Officers were called to New Lane station at 1.42pm on September 26 following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however sadly a 15-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Her family have been informed.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
