Body found on train tracks near railway station on Easter Monday

A body was found on train tracks near Atherton railway station.

Emergency services were called to the station, in Wigan on Easter Monday.

Paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene.

British Transport Police are working to identify the person and establish the circumstances surrounding their death.

Police have not released any further details.

Train services were suspended for several hours while an investigation was launched.

A replacement bus service was also set up between Manchester Victoria and Wigan Wallgate.

BTP said in a statement: "At 8.55am on 22/04, officers were called to Atherton station after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended however a person was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Officers are currently working to identify the person and establish the circumstances that led to the incident.”
