Police have now identified a body that was found off rocks near Whitley Bay.
Emergency services were called at around 11.35am on Wednesday after the man was spotted below Old Hartley Caravan Site, between Whitley Bay and Seaton Sluice .
Officers and volunteer rescue crews attended the scene where they found the body of a man.
The 34-year-old's family have now been informed.
Northumbria Police says he is from the local area and his death is not being treated as suspicious.
A spokesman said: "We can confirm the body has been identified as that of a 34-year-old local man and his next of kin have now been informed.
"There is not believed to be any third party involvement and a report has been prepared for the coroner."
