The news comes a month after the 53-year-old went missing after leaving Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow.
Police confirmed that a woman's body was discovered on the banks of the River Leven at Dumbarton.
Karen's family has been informed.
A full-scale search was launched after she was last spotted leaving Renton train station on January 13.
The marine unit and door-to-door enquiries were carried out by police.
Formal identification of the body is yet to take place,.
Inspector Graeme Hogg, from Police Scotland, said: "The family of missing 53-year-old woman Karen Murphy have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time."
