Body found on railway line as police called to the scene

A body was found on the tracks of Newton-le-Willows station this morning.

Police were called at 6.15 am following reports of a "casualty on the tracks".

Officers and paramedics attended but sadly the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is not being treated as suspicious and police are working to identify the body and inform the family.

British Transport Police did not confirm whether the person was a man or a woman.

Trains between St Helen’s Central and Eccles this morning were temporarily affected.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Newton-le-Willows station at 6.15am this morning following reports

of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended however a person has sadly been pronounced dead at the

scene.

“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.’’

Northern Rail tweeted regarding the incident and said: "Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident near the railway between St Helens Central and Eccles all lines are blocked.

"Disruption is expected until 9am."

As a result of the incident further lines were also closed and some trains were unable to run between Liverpool Lime Street / Warrington Bank Quay and Manchester via Eccles.
