The body was found on the sand near the water's edge on Friday night, and police were called to North Esplanade between Margaret Street and King Street just after 9:30pm.

Police crime scene investigators and forensic examiners have attended the scene along with detectives from the Western District service area.

"The man has not been formally identified and police are currently treating the death as unexplained," police said in a statement.
