Body found near Cork city centre as gardai launch investigation

A body was found in Cork city centre this afternoon.

Gardai have launched an investigation into the discovery, Cork Beo reports.

The body was located in a green area close to the River Lee.

The body, thought to be that of a man,  was found in Mardyke at around 2pm.

It was close to an area being used as a tented village by homeless people.

"Gardaí received a report of a body by the banks of the River Lee in Mardyke Walk area of Cork city just before 2.30pm on August 13," a garda spokesperson said.

"A man, age unknown at present, was pronounced dead at the scene."

Gardaí are not treating the incident as suspicious.
