Body found inside Upper Hunter home after house fire

A person has died in a house fire in the Upper Hunter.

Emergency crews found the body of the person, who is yet to be formally identified, inside the burnt home at Merriwa on Wednesday.

It came after firefighters were called to a rural property on Mountain Station Road about 9.15am following reports that a house was engulfed in flames.

Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW teams spent several hours putting out the blaze.

The body of a person was found inside the home after the fire was extinguished.

Police would not confirm on Wednesday afternoon whether the body belonged to a man or woman.

Police said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
