Body found in Wigan canal was that of missing man

A body found in a canal was that of a missing man from Wigan.

Darren Hunt, 47, was last seen at around 10pm on Sunday evening (February 28) near the Nisa convenience store in Manchester Road, Ince Bar.

On Monday, police issued a photograph of Mr Hunt as they appealed for help to find him.

Later that afternoon, officers discovered a man's body in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

Bolton Coroner's Court confirmed that they had received a file regarding Mr Hunt's death.

It is the third time in the space of just over six months that a man has been found dead in that particular stretch of water in the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Last week, during an inquest into the death of beloved father-of-two Mikey Greenall, senior coroner Timothy Brennand told Bolton Coroner's Court that he would write a 'letter of concern' following the death, and that of 22-year-old Matt Dutton, a month earlier.

Police said Mr Hunt's body was discovered near Leigh Road, which is closest to lock 83 on the canal, just a short walk from where Mr Dutton and Mr Greenall were found.

A petition has been set up to try and get barriers or lighting put up along the canal.
