Body found in Wicklow following early morning search operation

A body of a woman has been found in Arklow Harbour following a massive search operation this morning.

Gardai rushed to the scene at South Quay after receiving reports of a car entering the water shortly after 2 am this morning.

The body of a woman whose age is unknown has been moved removed to the mortuary at Loughlinstown Hospital.

A garda spokesman said: "The Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged. The outcome of a post-mortem examination will determine the course of the investigation."

The discovery came following a major search undertaken by the garda sub aqua unit, Coast Guard and RNLI i.

A garda spokesman said earlier this morning: "A search operation is underway in Co Wicklow after reports of a car entering the water at South Quay, Arklow shortly after 2am on Thursday 11 March 2021.

"Searches involving the Garda Sub Aqua Unit, Coast Guard, RNLI, Fire Services and local Gardaí are continuing."
