Body found in wheelie bin in Perth's Glen Brook dam in John Forrest National Park

WA Police have identified a body found inside a wheelie bin dumped in a dam in Perth's east.

In a brief statement on Tuesday evening, police said the man had "recently" been reported as a missing person and was "known to police".

Police were informed just after 12:30pm yesterday when someone found the man's remains in the partially submerged bin.

The dam is located in John Forrest National Park, a popular hiking and picnicking spot.

Police divers and forensics attended the scene.

Police say crime scene 'highly unusual'

Major Crime acting inspector Sean Wright said investigations were underway, but the nature of the location would make it difficult for detectives to determine what happened.

Mr Wright said members of the public had made the grim discovery.

"There was a smell and odour that came from the bin which aroused their suspicion more as to something sinister was in sight," he said.

The people who found the bin were not present when police removed the bin from the dam, Mr Wright added.

Detectives are asking for help from members of the public who saw the bin, or from anyone who saw any suspicious activity on or near Park Road in Hovea, near the Glen Brook dam.

Witnesses are asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
