Body found in search for missing Consett man, police confirm

A body has been found in search of a missing man from County Durham, police have confirmed.

Michael Byrne was last seen on Third Street in Crookhall, near Consett at around 11.30am on Saturday.

Durham Constabulary launched an appeal to try to find the 53-year-old but officers confirmed on Sunday afternoon that a body had been found.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Police thanked everyone who assisted with the search and said thoughts are with Michael's family.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "We regret to report that a body has been found in the search for missing Consett man Michael Byrne.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

"Our thoughts are with Michael’s friends and family, and we'd like to thank everyone who assisted in the search."
