A body has been found in the search for a missing teenage swimmer who disappeared at the Hawkesbury River, north west of Sydney.

Emergency services were called to the Hawkesbury River at Windsor about midday on Wednesday after a boy, 16, who had been swimming, could not be found.

After a multi-agency search, a body was found about 4.20pm.

It is believed to be that of the missing boy, but has not been formally identified.

The search was assisted by the PolAir helicopter, police divers, the NSW State Emergency Service and the Toll NSW Ambulance Aeromedical service.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
