A body has been found during the search for a missing pensioner from Gateshead.

Stewart Liddell, 69, has been missing since Tuesday morning after leaving his home in Rowlands Gill to go for a walk.

Officers launched a public appeal and a search for Stewart on Tuesday evening, which continued throughout Wednesday.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police has now confirmed that a body has been found during the search that is believed to be Stewart's.

They said: "Enquiries have continued into Wednesday evening but sadly a body has now been discovered in the area of Chopwell Woods.

"Formal identification is yet to take place but officers do believe the body is that of Stewart and his family have been informed."

Officers thanked the public for its help in the appeal.
