Body found in search for five-year-old who fell off inflatable in lake

A body has been found in the search for a five-year-old who fell off an inflatable in a lake.

The youngster went missing on Monday evening when he fell in to the water in County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland.

The search operation - which involved gardai, the Coast Guard, Civil Defence Ireland, a volunteer-based organisation that supports front line emergency services, Lough Mask Water Rescue and local divers - swung into action at around 6.30pm after the alarm was raised.

Pictures taken by the Irish Mirror late into the search last night show a Coast Guard helicopter flying over the lake, conducting an aerial survey in an attempt to find the boy.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Castlebar assisted by Coast Guard, Civil Defence, Lough Mask Water Rescue and local divers can confirm that the search operation for the five-year-old boy has been stood down as his body was recovered from Lough Mask this morning.

"An Garda Síochána are requesting that all media respect the privacy of the family at this time."
