Body found in River Mersey confirmed as missing pensioner Thomas Cook

A body found in the River Mersey has been confirmed as a missing pensioner who had dementia.

Police said the body, which was found in Otterspool on Thursday, belongs to 76-year-old Thomas Cook.

His family have been informed.

There is nothing to suggest there is anything suspicious surrounding his death and the matter has now been referred to the coroner.

Thomas, from Kensington was last seen at around 3pm on Monday.

He was the centre of a major search mission with coastguard teams joining police.

Mr Cook, who had dementia, was wearing a grey Nike tracksuit, walking boots, a black body warmer and black glasses.

Earlier this week police issued a further photograph of Mr Cook as detectives urged the public to help in their continued search for him.

On Wednesday a Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We have been searching along the River Mersey in the Runcorn and Garston areas following reports that an elderly man was stuck in the area, however we are also appealing to the public to get in touch if they have seen anyone that resembles Thomas or knows where he is to DM @MerPolCC, call 101 or in an emergency, always call 999."

Mr Cook is known to the New Brighton area.
