Body found in one of the world's smallest churches in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim

A body was tragically discovered in one of the world’s smallest churches today.

Emergency services discovered the body of a man in his 20s at Costello Memorial Chapel in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim shortly after 8am this morning.

It is understood that emergency services had to force open the door of the tiny chapel to access the scene.

The body has since been removed from the scene and taken to Sligo University Hospital and gardai said that a post-mortem will take place at a later date.

Costello memorial chapel is thought to be one of the world’s smallest churches, measuring just 16 by 12 feet.

It was built in 1877 by local trader Edward Costello as a burial place for his wife Mary Josephine Costello, who died at the age of 47.

Mary’s beautifully crafted casket was placed in a sunken area to the left of the entrance door, where it was covered with a specially made glass.

When he died Edward Costello was laid to rest beside his wife. The couple had no children and the tiny chapel has become a local landmark.
