Water Police have recovered a body in the ocean off Lancelin, north of Perth, which is thought to be that of missing man Matthew Phillips.

Mr Phillips, 49, was last seen in the northern Perth suburb of Sorrento almost a month ago.

His vehicle was discovered soon after at Grace Darling Park near the Lancelin foreshore, and a ground, air and sea search commenced.

A search for him was suspended several weeks ago.

A person diving in the area discovered a body yesterday and notified police.

The body has not been formally identified, but police say Mr Phillips's family has been notified of the development.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
