Body found in landfill identified as missing Texas girl

DALLAS _ The body found at an Arlington landfill has been identified as the missing Bedford teenager who was last seen Monday evening walking her dog.

An employee discovered the body Wednesday at the Republic Services landfill, Arlington police said.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office identified the body Thursday as that of Kaytlynn Cargill, 14.

Kaytlynn was last seen about 6:20 p.m. Monday about 4 { miles from the landfill.

Her parents began looking for her when she did not return home after about 30 minutes. The teen was reported missing to police about 8 p.m., police said.

Her dog was found tied to a fence at the nearby dog park. A friend of Kaytlynn's said the teen asked others to watch the dog for a minute but did not return, according to a flier.

On Wednesday, Bedford police were knocking on doors at an apartment complex near where she was last seen.

"We are shocked and saddened with this tragic news," Bedford Lt. Kirk Roberts said in a statement. "We will pursue every lead, leave no stone unturned, and bring the person or persons responsible for Kaytlynn's death to justice."

An Amber Alert was not authorized because Bedford police initially said they did not believe the 14-year-old was in danger, and that foul play was not suspected. Police said there was no indication Kaytlynn was abducted, and they were investigating her disappearance as a runaway case.

Certain criteria must be met before an Amber Alert is issued, including whether sufficient information is available to help locate the child, a suspect or a vehicle used in the abduction.

Kaytlynn's family did not answer a call for comment. The medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
