Body found in hunt for missing teenager whose girlfriend died in crash last year

A body has been found in the search for a missing teenager who was left heartbroken after his girlfriend was killed in a horror collision last year.

James Fincher's family were "very concerned for his wellbeing" after the 18-year-old man disappeared from Coalville in north-west Leicestershire on Saturday.

His death came about 18 months after his girlfriend, Sian Ellis, 15, was killed when she was hit by a school bus near a school in Coalville. His heartbroken sister said he had "struggled so much" and his mother wrote on social media: "Rip my baby boy look after him Sian."

James, who had "Sian" and angel wings tattooed on his body, had been campaigning for a controlled crossing to be installed at the site of the deadly crash which occurred in January 2019.

He was last seen at around 4.30am on Saturday morning and his family reported him missing from an address in the industrial town, which is north-west of Leicester, just before 4pm while appealing for help on social media.

An urgent search was launched by Leicestershire Police in the Coalville and Whitwick areas.

The National Police Air Service's Midlands team sent a helicopter to the area to help police who were searching on the ground on Saturday evening, but the hunt came to a tragic end.

James' body was found on Saturday night, said police.

The force said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

James' heartbroken family and friends paid tribute to him on Facebook after his body was discovered.

Mum Elizabeth Ann fincher posted a photo of James and Sian, writing: "I love you both so much. RIP my baby boy look after him Sian."

His sister Carolanne posted a photo of the pair together.

She wrote: "I'll miss you and love you always.

"My favorite little brother.

"Heartbroken beyond words."

She added: "It still doesn't feel real. You have struggled so much these past 18 months.

"I just wish there was something more we could have done to help you. I will miss you so much James sleep tight you beautiful soul."

Days before he died, James posted a quote on Facebook stating: "Never ignore a person who loves you, cares for you and misses you, because one day you might wake up and realise you lost the moon while counting the stars."

In May, he had asked friends to donate to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for his birthday.

He had set up an online petition as part of a campaign to have a controlled crossing installed at site where Sian was killed in order to make the road safer for schoolchildren. The petition has so far had more than 5,000 signatures.

He wrote on Facebook in February: "Over a year on since my girlfriend, Sian Ellis was tragically and so unexpectedly hit by a bus, crossing over the current ‘crossing’ that isn’t a controlled one, which gives vehicles the priority and yet still no changes have been made.

"Let’s get this in circulation again and I’ll be doing a lot of emailing to local MPs and the council until something is finally put in place.

"The more signatures it gets, the higher the possibility of it being recognised and something a lot safer finally being put in place.

"The amount of students that still cross that dangerous, busy road at the end of each school day is scary, we want to avoid any more tragic incidences from happening on this road and keep the students safe."

Sian, from Whitwick, was walking home from school when she was hit by the bus, which was full of children, on the afternoon of January 28, 2019.

Just days after she died, heartbroken James posted a video and pictures of a wedding ring, writing: "Told you I was gunna marry you. Just wish it didn't have to be like this."

At an inquest into her death, evidence from police suggested the King Edward VII College pupil was distracted by her mobile phone when she stepped in front of the bus.

An assistant coroner concluded she died as a result of a "road traffic collision".

A husband and wife were convicted of driving offences in connection with her death.

Bus driver Michael Parker, 62, was fined £235 and banned from driving for four years, and his wife Paula Jane, 54, was fined.

A court was told the bus was full at the time, with children standing in a prohibited area.

Michael Parker held only a provisional licence and as a result had no insurance. Jane Parker was transport manager of the bus company.

He admitted driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, using a vehicle without insurance and carrying passengers in a manner likely to cause danger.

Jane Parker was convicted of causing the driving of a vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence and causing the use of a motor vehicle without insurance.

She was given eight points on her licence, fined £120, £60 costs and was ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge.

After the inquest, Sian's heartbroken parents said in a statement: "Sian was a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin, a girlfriend, a best friend, and a friend to many, and the measure of her loss is unquantifiable.

"Whilst we have to come to terms with this tragic accident, we must try to help others learn from it and to stress the dangers of the use of mobile phones and the distractions that these can cause when walking by and crossing busy roadways.

"We see this everyday and hope that, if anything good can come from this, it is that other children (and adults) will have learned not to put themselves in similar danger.

"However, although we see this every day, what happened to Sian was that she was struck and killed by a bus driven by someone who should never have been at the wheel in the first place, and we will forever be tormented by the question, that had the driver not chosen not to break the law that afternoon, Sian would she still be with us.

"The sentence that he has received does not reflect the severity of his actions, actions that are totally deplorable, the consequences of which we will all have to live with for the rest of our lives.

"Whilst we thank the police for their efforts and support during this past year, a call to review the laws broken and the sentences received for such a crime is universally what is echoed from ourselves and any supporters since the court cases last year."

After James' body was found, a police spokesman said on Sunday morning: "Officers searching for an 18-year-old man reported missing have found a body.

"James Fincher was reported missing from an address in Coalville at 3.55pm yesterday (Saturday).

"A body was found in the area of Meadow Lane, Coalville yesterday evening.

"Formal identification is yet to take place.

"The death is not believed to be suspicious and a file is being prepared for HM Coroner.

"Thank you to everyone who shared our appeal and provided information."
