Body found in Cockle Creek was 'wrapped in plastic' and spotted by driver

Police remain at a scene in Killingworth where a body wrapped in plastic was found floating in Cockle Creek by members of the public on Saturday.

Investigators spent most of Saturday afternoon at the site after local police were called to Cockle Creek, near Wakefield Road, about 10.30am.

Police reports on Saturday initially listed the body's location as in Teralba, but this has since been confirmed as Killingworth.

It is understood a member of the public who was driving past the creek saw an item wrapped in plastic floating in the water and called police.

Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District attended and removed the item from the water.

"The item, believed to be a body, will be subject to forensic examination by specialist police," a NSW Police statement said on Sunday.

"A crime scene was established at the creek and emergency services remain at the scene."

Police has established Strike Force Furzer to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District and the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad will investigate.

No further information is currently available.

Saturday report:

A BODY has been discovered wrapped in plastic in a creek at Teralba.

Police were called to the scene near Wakefield Road on Saturday morning and have been on-site investigating throughout the afternoon.

It is not yet known how the body was discovered or whether the creek is on private property or other land.

"A crime scene has been established following the discovery of a body in water near Wakefield Road, Teralba just before 11am Saturday," a NSW Police media statement said.

"Police attached to Lake Macquarie Police District attended the location and secured a crime scene, which will remain overnight.

"Wakefield Road will remain closed between the Broadway and Rhondda Road throughout the evening."
