Body found in canal where man spotted swimming then 'disappeared from view'

A body has been found in a canal in Ellesmere Port near where a man was spotted swimming.

Police officers discovered the body of a 62-year-old male, in the canal at Telfords Quay around 8pm last night.

This followed reports from a witness at the scene, who claimed they saw someone swimming in the canal and yelled at them to get out over fears for their safety.

The eyewitness told Cheshire Live: "Someone saw a person swimming in the canal and yelled at them to get out as it's dangerous.

"Unfortunately, the person disappeared from view so the emergency services were called out. The helicopter is overhead and there are several boats out on the water."

This morning Cheshire Constabulary confirmed officers recovered the body of a local man from the canal last night.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "At 7.59pm on August 6 police were called to the canal at Telfords Quay, Ellesmere Port following reports of a man in the canal.
