Body found in canal after police and forensics van called to scene

Police have confirmed that a body was found in a canal in Ilkeston.

Derbyshire Police were called to the Erewash Canal Path on Nottingham Road at 5.45am on Thursday, May 28, following reports that a passer-by had found a body.

A cordon has been set up in the area, close to Gallows Inn Pub, while detectives investigate the circumstances of the incident.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police has confirmed to Nottinghamshire Live that a body was found in the canal.

In a statement, the police have also said: "There is currently a scene in place in the Erewash Canal Path near to the Gallows Inn Pub, off Nottingham Road, in Ilkeston.

"We were called at 5.45am this morning to report that a passer-by had found a body in the canal.

"Officers remain in the area and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the incident."

Derbyshire Live reports walkers and cyclists struggling to find alternate routes when they were told they cannot walk down the path this morning.
